The use of CFD in the field of plastics has a wide range of applications:
- The complex rheological characteristics of plastics melts with non-linear dependence of viscosity, strain and temperature complicate the prediction of flow profiles even in simple geometries like duct bends and changes of diameter.
- The linking of flow dynamics and heat transport in plastic processing plants and pipelines reduce the effort of geometric layout and operation of heating devices in order to reliably avoid local melt freezing.
- CFD helps with the layout of cooling flows in complicated distribution device geometries. Additionally, flow forces on foils and plastic forms as well as cooling rates can be predicted
- The tool design gets faster and cheaper through the use of CFD.
- Check the consequences of a change of the tool on the flow of the melt with the computer and save steps of optimisation and time-to-market
